This October, The Projection Studio, led by renowned artists Ross Ashton and Karen Monid, will unveil a breathtaking light and sound installation at York Minster light show. Titled “Phoenix,” this mesmerising display commemorates the 40th anniversary of the devastating 1984 fire that ravaged the Minster’s south transept, causing £2.25 million in damage.
A Tribute to Resilience and Rebuilding: The York minster light show
Inspired by the tragic blaze, “Phoenix” brings to life the harrowing moments of the fire, with stunning visual effects depicting lightning strikes, molten lead cascading from the roof, and the iconic Rose Window shattering. The projection then transitions to the Minster’s miraculous recovery, symbolising hope, renewal, and the indomitable spirit of York.
Neil Sanderson, director of the York Minster Fund, emphasises the significance of this installation: “Phoenix” not only revisits a moment of disaster but also celebrates the resilience and dedication that went into restoring this magnificent building. The show is expected to draw thousands, similar to the studio’s previous works, “Northern Lights” in 2019 and “Platinum and Light” in 2022.
