We’re delighted to announce that The Projection Studio has been awarded a Scientists in Congregations grant through ECLAS (Equipping Christian Leadership in an Age of Science) for our new project, Without a Voice, They Speak.
Developed in partnership with Durham City Methodists and Durham University, this new arts-and-science initiative will build on the collaborative work we have already undertaken through projects such as CODEX and RIVERS OF INK. Together, these projects have explored the extraordinary legacy of medieval manuscripts through projection, sound, and immersive storytelling — bringing centuries-old histories to contemporary audiences in new and engaging ways.
With Without a Voice, They Speak, we will expand this work further by uncovering the hidden scientific stories embedded within Britain’s illuminated manuscripts. While these manuscripts are often viewed primarily as sacred objects or works of art, they also represent remarkable achievements in early material science and craftsmanship.
Drawing on cutting-edge research from Durham University, the project will explore the chemistry of medieval inks and pigments, the global trade routes that supplied their materials, and the sophisticated scientific knowledge possessed by medieval scribes and makers. Through projection, sound, and public engagement, we aim to reveal the manuscripts not only as artistic treasures, but also as evidence of experimentation, innovation, and interconnected cultures.

The Scientists in Congregations programme, supported by the John Templeton Foundation, encourages creative collaboration between churches, scientists, and local communities. Through ECLAS, the initiative supports projects that foster meaningful dialogue around science, faith, history, and public life through artistic and community-led engagement.
For The Projection Studio, this grant represents an exciting opportunity to continue developing immersive experiences that connect research with audiences in accessible and memorable ways. Our work has always been rooted in the idea that projection can transform public understanding — turning architecture, heritage, and scholarship into living, shared experiences.
We are incredibly excited to begin this journey with our partners and look forward to bringing the rich heritage of British illuminated manuscripts to wider audiences through light, sound, and storytelling.
More updates on Without a Voice, They Speak will be shared soon. ✨ Follow us on our social channels – Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to stay up to date on our upcoming projects.
