Innovative Architectural Projection Mapping Project “PHOENIX” to Illuminate York Minster

In a groundbreaking fusion of art and technology, renowned artists Ross Ashton and Karen Monid are set to unveil “PHOENIX,” an architectural projection mapping experience that will transform the interior of the historic York Minster. This captivating project, running from 19th October to the 2nd November, commemorates the fire of 1984 that destroyed the medieval roof of the south transept, and pays tribute to the courageous firemen and staff who risked their lives to save the cathedral.

“PHOENIX” will create a dynamic visual narrative and will feature the voices of the brave individuals who fought the blaze, offering visitors a powerful and emotional connection to the history of York Minster.

“We are thrilled to collaborate on a project that marries the artistry of projection mapping with the architectural grandeur of York Minster,” said Ross Ashton. “By incorporating the voices of those who experienced the fire, we hope to evoke a profound sense of reflection and appreciation for the cathedral’s enduring spirit.”

Karen Monid added, “One of the most compelling parts of this story is how it moves from a chance occurrence of lightning to the enormous spectacle of the fire. The aftermath of this event is the story of people coming together to meet the challenge of rebuilding and repairing the damage and nurturing a vision to also create something new that would speak to people now.”

This project hopes to create something of the spectacle that the fire was along with for those who did not see it represents a fusion of history and modernity, celebrating the timeless beauty of York Minster while honouring the sacrifices made to protect it. We hope it sparks inspiration and dialogue among all who experience it.”

The installation will be accompanied by a series of events, including guided tours and workshops, designed to deepen visitors’ understanding of the intersection of technology and architecture in contemporary art.

“PHOENIX” promises to be a transformative experience for both locals and tourists alike, inviting them to rediscover the beauty of York Minster through a fresh lens and a poignant narrative.
